The Morning Post of 19th August 1869 reported that Athletic Sports were held on Wednesday afternoon 18th August on the Great Lines. The program included a bicycle race "which was a novelty here; the distance was half a mile. Four officers entered for the bicycle race - Captain Corbet, Captain Hallowes, Lieutenant Mitford and Lieutenant Hare. This was watched with much interest. It was well contested and was won by Lieutenant Mitford".
